5 failure modes of spur gear

1, The abrasion of tooth surface
Due to the relative sliding between the meshing tooth surface, some of the more hard abrasive
particles run into the friction surface for open gear transmission or the closed gear transmission
which contain an oil that not clean . This cause the change of the tooth profile and the increase
of side gap , so the gear is over reduced to break. Under normal circumstances, it will cause tooth
wear in its’ operation only in the condition that lubricating oil was mixed up with abrasive grains.
2, The Surface Bonding of spur gear tooth surface
For the high speed and heavy load gear transmission, the friction between the teeth is relatively
high which cause the temperature of meshing zone too high. Once the lubrication condition is bad,
the oil film between the tooth surface can be lost, which makes the metal surface of the two teeth
contact directly and bond together. When the tooth surface continue to move relatively, The harder
tooth surface will tear a part of material of softer tooth surface along the sliding direction and form
the groove.
3, Fatigue pitting
When two spur gear teeth meshing with each other, the force and reaction force between the teeth
produce the contact stress of the two working surface. Since the position of the meshing point is
changed and the gear move periodically, so the contact stress changes according to its’ pulse cycle.
With a long time in the alternating contact stress, there will be a small crack in the gear tooth surface,
and with the passage of time, the cracks gradually spread laterally on the surface, and form shallow pits.
4, Tooth break
In the operation period, the spur gear which bears load is just like a cantilever beam, the root of the
spur gear face cyclic stress of the pulse which exceeds the fatigue limit of gear material, the spur gear
will have cracks and the cracks gradually extended. When the rest of the part can not bear the transmission
load , the gear tooth will break. Due to the serious impact during work time, partial load and uneven material,

5, Tooth plastic deformation
Facing dynamic loading or overloading, the tooth surface is easy to produce plastic deformation, which cause
the deformation of the involute profile curve .
